Rockford Watch Company Pocket Watch with Buckeye Case. This was another recent estate find, and turns out to be an early offering of the Rockford Watch Company in Illinois. Based on the serial number, we believe the movement was manufactured in 1881 or 1882. It is mounted in a large Buckeye case with an open face design. The movement has serial number 143291 and is a 15 jewel size 18 model. It is key wound, but no key came with the watch. The knob is missing from the stem, so we couldn’t test the time setting. The Buckeye case is number 1551 and is personalized on the back, but otherwise has a plain finish without adornment. There is a thick crystal on the front with beveled edge. We are not sure of the case material, but think it is silver plated, or possibly one of the substitute silver products. It is not attracted by a magnet, but lacks any coin silver or other precious markings. The watch weighs 149 grams and has a heavier heft than most. Actual dimensions as measured are. Diameter: 57.2 mm. Thickness: 22.3 mm. Condition: The watch is untested without key, and is offered in as-is condition. Physically, it is in quite good shape, especially considering its age. The case shows some spotting on the surface, but is smooth to the touch. The crystal has a flea bite at top center, with some fine surface scratches, but has good clarity and a nice overall edge to the bevel. The face is bright with little wear and no hairlines that we see. The movement is clean with some discoloration to the finish in places, but that doesn’t seem to be surface rust. We’ve included some close up pictures so you can properly evaluate it. The biggest physical issue is the missing knob on the stem. Pictures show the actual Rockford watch you will receive.
