Antique c 1850 EDWARD PRIOR London Triple 3 Case Verge Fusee Pocket Watch REPAIR
A great find from a watch collector’s estate! An antique triple cased pocket watch made by Edward Prior of London, circa 1850. The presume gilt movement is a key wind and key set, fusee, with a verge escapement. The mainspring will take a full wind. Using the key included. Without removing any parts from the movement I recently added some watch oil to a. Couple of the internal pivots and pinions. He escapement has run for over 22. In the’DIAL DOWN’ position. I will try to update this. Number every hour until the watch stops. But the balance wheel DID STOP (before I started the dial down trial run) as soon as the. Was turned to the’DIAL UP’ position. I DO NOT KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM IS and as. Private museum that was closing. The only research I have done was to look for the name of’Edward Prior, Watchmaker’ on Google; to find the first listing. Pointing to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, they have an Edward Prior pocket watch with a serial number. That is 12 numbers earlier. Than the serial number of 66937 on the watch listed; they stated that their watch was circa. 1850 is used above. The movement has an intricately carved / engraved balance cock and pillars. There is a NON-ORIGINAL key included. That will wind the mainspring from the rear and will fit the hand post at the front. The key is inscribed with, ABNER LOWELL. PORTLAND, ME, WATCHMAKER & JEWELER”; from the Internet, “. He worked from 1870 to 1877 as a silversmith and watchmaker. In Portland ME as A. LOWELL & Co in association with his sons Oliver and John. The white enamel dial has written on it, “EDWARD PRIOR, LONDON”; it has some noticeable hairline cracks, please see the. The numerals on the watch are Turkish; presumed made for the Turkish market. The high convex glass is presumed old as it has a long thin ripple / wave near the center; there are also several scratches. The inner case is gilt, presumed over brass. The hinge for the bezel is in good condition; the bezel fully seats to the case. But does NOT’snap’ or stay closed if the watch is turned to the crystal down position. This is good to know. The steel movement latch does press in as it should, but is also does NOT’engage’ with the case (presumed from wear). Breaking the glass crystal! The inside rear of the case is stamped, “JB, WW, (heart symbol)”; the upper set of letters are NOT as clear; perhaps, JP, C. There is much LOSS to the gilt plating on the outer case. The middle case is made of the same material as the inner case and has a functioning hinge and latch. There is some engraving. To the upper and lower perimeters of the upper and middle sections of the case. There is some LOSS to the plating. Some old paper in the bottom (NOT watch papers; just OLD paper). The outer case is presumed tortoiseshell applied to the gilt over brass surface. Most of the gilt is WORN off. The hinge is in good. Condition; although the steel inner latch is’BROKEN OFF’ (the’button’ on the outside of the case is still there). PLEASE NOTE: Without the steel latch on the outer case to hold the two halves of the case closed, there is approximately a 1mm. Gap between the halves; they can be pushed together to meet, but they will NOT stay flush with each other without the latch. There is old velvet cloth in the lower portion of the case. Splits’ to the shell at the 4 and 6 o’clock positions. (presumed that one of them was there at manufacture) on the upper case half. There are 10 of the. Small, presumed copper rivets (which hold the shell to the metal) MISSING on the upper half of the case and 12 on the lower. The lower half has 3 cracks in the shell from the outer edge to approximately 11mm towards the center of the case. Outer diameter of the case is 54.28mm, the height of the watch with the bow included is 68.75mm and the depth of the watch, including. The crystal is 32.84. The diameter of the watch movement (as measured just below the upper lip) is 31.11mm. Please see the detailed pictures for what is included and its condition.
