Note: Please read this again carefully if you have read it before, as I have twice changed the description of the movement’s performance (as my understanding of it increased) and added various details. This is a 15 jewel wind-up Swiss-made Perret & Fils pocket watch, probably made in the 1880/90′s. It is stem wind and pin set (both work). The dial has no visible hairlines. The hands are in good shape, although in reflected light you can see that the hour hand is blue, the minute hand is plum and the second hand is gold. Also, upon close inspection, the thick glass crystal seems slightly tilted, although it appears to be firmly attached. The movement has problems that need to be fixed before it can run properly. At first I thought it had a broken mainspring because it wouldn’t hold a wind, so I took it to my watch guy. He said the mainspring isn’t the problem; that the center wheel has a missing tooth/bad pinion. He said he couldn’t fix it. Right now the watch is winding but doesn’t run on its own. It will run, however, if you press on the 3rd wheel (see last picture with running movement and toothpick pressing on 3rd wheel); and when it’s running, the second hand does move. It seems to all go bad when the missing tooth is in the wrong position. I hope you understand it better than I do. By the way, the escapement is probably lever type but is atypical in my experience (hard to describe the difference with limited watchmaker vocabulary). The bottom line is that the movement has a lot of good parts, but also has a very hard-to-fix problem unless you can replace the center wheel. Covers open no more than 90 degrees. It is holding a 16 size movement — about 43 mm. The case is 2 wide and appears to be silver, but I don’t see any marks inside the covers. There is a case serial number (26322) on both the inside back cover (with “4 0″ above it) and inside the cuvette. The covers, sides, stem and bow have niello engravings. The niello has some chips from age but its condition is nice overall. The cuvette is beautifully engraved with the words: REMONTOIR, Ancre Ligne Droit, 15 RUBIS, Spiral Breguet, Perret & Fils, Geneve. The watch is pin set, which means the button/pin to the side of the stem is pushed in (with a fingernail maybe) while turning the crown (crown is not pulled out). The shield on the front looks like copper or pink gold and has no initials. The covers are both hinged and fit snug, and the crystal is clear. The bow stands up and the crown is sharp. The watch is not in running condition. Please feel free to ask questions.
