Silver pair cased Verge pocket watch J. Case BN London 1796. A beautifully elegant pair cased verge watch by the famous London maker James Freeman. In a paired case with correct hallmarks for London 1796. Incuse makers mark BN, with pellet between initials is for Bartholomew Need 13 Bridgewater Square and 6 Cross Street Clerkenwell. Mark entered 6.8.1787 (Grimwade section V and VI). Dimensions: Outer case 5.7cm diameter x 2.6cm. Inner case 4.8cms diameter x 2.5cm. Length of watch including suspension loop: 7.6cm. Condition: The enamel face is clear and clean. There is a very faint hairline between 11 and 12 (very hard to see with the naked eye – see photographs). Fob hanger is secure but skew. The outer case is missing its catch button. I have not attempted to wind the watch and the workings appear complete. The workmanship on the movement is exquisite. Items like this shed light onto a distant time and underline the fact that craftsmanship and the ability to make extraordinary things by hand was a common currency.
