This is an impressive looking Waltham 18-size, key wound Man’s silver pocket watch, which dates back to 1868. It features a well built, 4 ounce coin silver hunting case, housing a very high quality Appleton Tracy 15-jewel key wind movement and is fronted by a beautiful white porcelain dial. It has been completely serviced withing the past year and had a new white alloy mainspring installed. It is running strongly and keeping excellent time. Unusually, this watch has its original stopwork mechanism in place, see last pic. The case measures a 58.8mm (2 1/4) in diameter and weighs 185.5 grams (6.4oz). A key is supplied with the watch. I will also gladly consider any offers you may with to make. This piece starts with a quadruple hinged case which is stamped inside the back cover with A. Pure Coin #1005, denoting it is made of solid coin silver (0.900 fine). The front cover is ornately decorated and has an unsigned initial shield in the center. Swirling patterns decorate both covers. The edge of the case has an attractive reeded ring. The front cover springs open to 90 degrees when released. The back and dust covers also opens to 90 degrees. All hinges are firm and the covers snap shut tight leaving no play or gaps. The bow has remained tight. The case shows only light, even pocket wear and has aged gracefully. This is a bright, clean case, in very good overall condition. The white single sunk porcelain dial looks is in good condition. With just one small hairline from the sub-second dial through the 29th minute. It is signed American Watch Co. The blued steel hands look in nice condition and have mirrored ends. A hinged bezel houses the glass crystal and opens to allow the time to be set from the dial side. The crystal is scratch free. The 18sz, 15 jewel, Model 1857, gilt, full plate key wind and key set movement is super bright and crisp. It is signed Appleton Tracy CO. Waltham Mass, Foggs Patent. The serial number of 365488 dates this piece back to around 1868. In its era, this was a high end movement and has gold timing screws on the balance wheel. The movement shows only minor service marks and has a very attractive luster. It has been serviced within the past year and had a new white alloy mainspring installed. It winds and sets fine and is running strongly and keeping excellent time. A key will be included with the watch. Unusually, this watch has its original stopwork mechanism still in place, see last pic. This is a very well preserved timepiece that is quality made, heavy and substantial.
