Hoyt 15-jewel 18-size damascened nickel shaped ¾ plate lever movement, counterpoised straight line escapement, steel escape wheel, gold train, bimetallic balance, blued over coiled spring, regulator with gold index on back plate, stem wound, lever set, glazed dust cap, gold cuvette, signed white enameled dial, roman chapters, subsidiary seconds, blued hands, signed and numbered M. Smith chased and engine turned case 53mm, 145.4 grams. Was a successful Detroit entrepreneur who founded, with his brothers, a jewelry business in 1864. Seeking to attract the most affluent clientele, he included in his inventory a limited production high grade watch made by Charles B. Hoyt (born in 1828). Hoyt in turn had been influenced by, and possibly collaborated with, JH. The depression of 1873 ended Smith’s watchmaking venture. Hoyt was then persuaded to join the ill-fated Freeport Watch Co. Whose surviving movements are attributed to him. Following the disastrous fire that ended the venture, he worked with the Illinois, Rockford and J.
