On offer here is a rare example of a London made centre seconds verge watch dating from around 1800. Gilt metal pair cases 55mm diameter In very good original condition, movement has been cleaned and adjusted as closely as possible so timekeeping is good though not consistent in positions as one would expect. Full plate verge escapement movement with a cap and visible diamond endstone. Has third wheel centre seconds motion with a stop lever. Signed on the cap and movement plate. DUPONT late Emery’s Cock-Spur Street Charing Cross LONDON. The famous precision watch maker Josiah Emery died fairly suddenly in 1795 and his business was apparently split up with most going to Recordon. Dupont may have been one of Emery’s workmen. Not many watches signed by Dupont have been recorded. The high grade movement has a steel balance and decorative table cock, balance holes are jewelled. Apart from the balance stop lever, an interesting technical feature is the presence of a gold centre seconds pinion made in order to reduce friction (see picture). R egilded pair cases 55mm in diameter stamped with the makers mark TG (Thomas Gooch) who made cases for all the finest’names’ including chronometer makers such as Pennington. Cases altogether are in very good condition and have very little wear. Outer case has a charming watch paper. Everything closes neatly with no jumping. Plain convex glass, not a bulls eye these were ugly Victorian inventions. Top quality dead white gloss enamel dial and with fifth seconds marking to the perimeter, altogether a beautiful layout with radial arabic numerals. With gold hands and original blued steel seconds hand The gloss white enamel dial is perfect and original although there a one or two small inclusions at the very edge however these cannot be seen with the bezel closed. There is no acrylic enamel’restoration’ of any kind. This kind of verge watch with centre seconds motion and stop function was specifically designed for timing short periods such as astronomical observations. As long term accuracy was not required, there was no necessity to provide temperature compensation. Such watches were intended to be used together with an accurate Regulator or Chronometer. Cases, movement and dial are all original and not married up. An ideal verge watch for the true horological connoisseur.
