A fine and rare triple case half quarter repeater pocket watch by John Ellicott of London, listed in Bailles as one of the most Eminent English watch makers of the 18th century. The watch retains it’s original green leather protector outer case with gilt and pinwork decoration. The 22 caret gold middle case is pierced and chased around the front bezel and on the back cover features a repousse scene of a gent and a horse being greeted by an older man and his wife. The 22 caret gold inner case is decorated with elaborate pierced work of swirls and flowers, on the back of the inner case is a depiction of a large bird in flight, higher above the bird is the watch serial number 6792. The inside of the inner case houses a full size bell, hidden behind the bell are the hallmarks for London 1773, with a repeat serial number 6792 and the case makers mark TL (incuse with star shape above)for Thomas Layton of Dean St, Fetter Lane London. The chain-driven fusee movement with Cylinder escapement has a half quarter striking repeating mechanism, which is activated by the decorative plunge pendant at the top of the watch. The movement is signed Ellicott London and serial numbered 6792, it has a large diamond endstone, Tompion regulator, the dust cover is again signed Ellicott London and serial numbered 6792. The white enamel dial has Beetle and poker hands with a bullseye mineral glass crystal. The diameter of the watch complete is 58mm and the combined weight is 179 grammes, The outer leather bound protector case has served its purpose well by ensuring that both gold cases have been kept in pristine condition, the leather covering is beginning to show its age in places more so on the front bezel. The dial has no hairlines or chips. The movement is in good strong working order and the repeater function works correctly and in sync to the time. Footnote John Ellicott was appointed clock maker to George III in 1762, he was renowned for his use of the cylinder escapement.
